DRUM PUMP MUST BE COMPATIBLE WITH AVIATION ANTI-ICING ADDITIVE
A considerable amount of time and money is spent making sure aviation fuels meet specific standards for safety and quality. Many times, these same practices are overlooked when dealing with aviation anti-icing additive.
We were recently contacted by a customer who exposed a serious vulnerability in handling FSII by operators or customers inexperienced in handling hazardous chemicals. FSII is a product regularly handled in the general aviation industry. It's not uncommon for operators to take hazardous products, including jet fuel, for granted when used in daily operations.
Serious contamination issues can result from the use of drum pumps not constructed from materials compatible with FSII. We hear from customers on a regular basis who share with us how they go through numerous drum pumps before ultimately buying a drum pump fully compatible with the additive. "Go through" in this example means that the corrosive nature of the additive has eroded the metal and nonmetal components of the drum pump to the point where the pump no longer functions. The result is seriously contaminated additive.

Many materials react with FSII in an extreme manner. One material in particular is aluminum. Aluminum and FSII react quickly to form a dangerous gelatinous cocktail which could lead to a serious fuel contamination issue or accident. The photographs below are the result of FSII coming into contact with aluminum for less than one week.
For this reason, it is imperative that operators and fuel handlers use additive handling equipment manufactured from the appropriate fully compatible materials.
